Source Naturals Acetyl L-Carnitine &Alpha-Lipoic Acid 650mg, 60 Tabs (1 Bottle)

Source Naturals ACETYL L-CARNITINE & ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID contains two critical nutrients, acetyl L-carnitine and alpha-lipoic acid, to support your vital metabolic functions. These compounds support the body's own system for the maintenance of cell function as we age.

Acetyl L-Carnitine & Alpha-Lipoic Acid Benefits:

  • Energy
  • Inflammation Response
  • Antioxidant Defense
  • Sugar Regulation
  • Liver/Detox
  • Circulation
  • Cognition / Nerves
Acetyl-L-carnitine:
Acetyl-L-carnitine may support healthy cardiac function. It may have antioxidant and anti-apoptotic activity. Acetyl-L-carnitine levels may decrease with advancing age. However, because it is not an essential nutrient, true deficiencies do not occur.

L carnitine is derived from the lysine and methionine amino acids. It is mainly synthesized in the liver and the kidneys, and must be transported for use to other tissues in the body. It is found in highest concentration in tissues that use fatty acids as the main dietary fuel, such as the skeletal and cardiac muscles. One of the key uses of Acetyl L-Carnitine supplement is for fatty acid oxidation - helping users burn unwanted body fat. Fatty acids are one the key energy sources the body uses, and oxidation is the process by which they're broken down to create energy. The fatty acids cannot penetrate the inner mitochondia membrane (where they are burned for energy), and the key role for L-Carnitine is to transport fatty acids accross the mitochondra membrane to allow for oxidation of the fats. Acetyl-L-carnitine is a molecule that occurs naturally in the brain, liver, and kidney. It is also available as a dietary supplement.

Alpha Lipoic Acid:
Very few of us know the benefits one can obtain from supplementing with ALA. Alpha Lipoic Acid is known by a variety of names including thioctic acid, 1, 2-dithiolane-3-pentanoic acid, 1, 2-dithiolane-3 valeric acid, and 6, 8-thioctic acid. As a sulfur compound,it comprises caprylic acid, a medium chain fatty acid, with two sulfur atoms stuck on the ends and it is capable of binding and inactivating heavy metals like mercury, cadmium, excess iron and excess copper.

Among its primary function in the body, where it is converted into lipoamide, is to activate enzymes that handle energy producing molecules, such as pyruvate, and to break down products from amino acids. Basically, ALA helps us collect energy and nutrients from the food we eat. The body needs ALA to produce energy. It plays a crucial role in the mitochondria, the energy-producing structures in cells. The body actually makes enough ALA for these basic metabolic functions.

This compound acts as an antioxidant, however, only when there is an excess of it and it is in the "free" state in the cells. But there is little free ALA circulating in your body, unless you consume supplements or get it injected. Foods contain only tiny amounts of it. What makes ALA special as an antioxidant is its versatility; it helps deactivate an unusually wide array of cell-damaging free radicals in many bodily systems.

In particular, ALA helps protect the mitochondria and the genetic material, DNA. ALA also works closely with vitamin C and E and some other antioxidants, "recycling" them and thus making them much more effective. As mentioned earlier, ALA plays a large role as an anti-oxidant. Studies suggest that ALA works in conjunction with vitamins C and E, to help improve their effectiveness in combating free radicals, as mentioned earlier. The studies even suggest that ALA can actually replace the function of vitamin C in animals deficient in vitamin C. This is especially important to bodybuilders because intense physical activity such as weight training or extreme cardio can cause extreme oxidative damage, letting loose many free radicals in the body. That is why antioxidants, both natural and supplemental, are critical to bodybuilders

does it work? "Again, I like the price of this one better than some others Ive tried on the Internet, but just cant tell that it is doing any good. But if Im going to run experiments, better to get a good value. The dosage on this one is lower, I believe (not looking at both right now), so I dont feel like my body has to overprocess it and get rid of the excess. Not sure if it really is retaining cell function... maybe Ill know in a few months...? Years? Well see..."

Without ALA Acetyl Carnitine makes it easier for your mitochondria to use fat for fuel, and in so doing, increases the amount of free radicals created. Studies in rats showed damage to the mitochondria as a result, which was neutralized when ALA was added to hand out electrons to the additional free radicals created. Super Oxide Dismutase is the mitochondria's natural free radical neutralizer, and is also available from Source Nautrals, but shouldn't be taken as often as ALA. I take one twice a week, so as not to discourage its natural production. Companies selling Acetyl Carnitine without adding Alpha Lipoic Acid are irresponsible and are increasing energy in the short run, but accelerating the aging process by damaging mitochondria. Carnitine Fumarate is a more conservative way to increase mitochondrial production. I alternate between them.
