Resveratrol is an effective antioxidant several studies have demonstrated this fat. It inhibits lipid peroxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), prevents the cytotoxicity of oxidized LDL, and protects cells against lipid peroxidation.. It is thought that because it contains highly hydrophilic and lipophilic properties, it can provide more effective protection than other well-known antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E. On the other hand, it is less effective than the antioxidants quercetin and epicatechin found in red wine.
Reduced platelet aggregation has also been demonstrated in studies on resveratrol, further contributing to its prevention of atherosclerosis. To date, most of the research on resveratrol's antioxidant and anti-platelet properties has been done in vitro (in an artificial environment using test-tube or tissue-culture preparations).
Resveratrol is a polyphenolic compound found in:
- Grapes
- Red wine
- Purple grape juice
- Peanuts
- Some berries
When taken orally, resveratrol appears to be well-absorbed by humans, but its bioavailability is relatively low because it is rapidly metabolized and eliminated.
Scientists became interested in exploring potential health benefits of resveratrol when its presence was reported in red wine, leading to speculation that resveratrol might help explain the “French Paradox.”
Moderate alcohol consumption has been consistently associated with 20-30% reductions in coronary heart disease risk, but it is not yet clear whether red wine polyphenols, such as resveratrol, confer any additional risk reduction. (More Information)
Resveratrol administration increased the lifespans of yeast, worms, and fruit flies, but it is not known whether resveratrol will have similar effects in higher animals or humans.
Jarrow Formulas’ Resveratrol Synergy™ contains the biologically active flavonoid resveratrol, plus catechins (green tea), anthocyanins (grape skin) and proanthocyanins (OPCs from grape seed). Resveratrol (3,4,5-trihydroxystilbene), extracted from Huzhang (“tiger cane”) root, protects circulation and heart function by inhibiting platelet aggregation. Green Tea contains flavans, Grape Seed OPCs are flavanols (condensed flavans), and Grape Skin contains anthocyanins. These synergistic plant extracts spare vitamin C and protect capillaries.
