Jarrow Formulas Niacinamide 250mg (1 Bottle)
Niacinamide is one of the water-soluble B-complex vitamins. Niacin, or nicotinic acid, is also known as Vitamin B-3. When an amide molecule attaches itself to niacin, it becomes niacinamide. One major difference is that in doses exceeding 50 mg, niacin typically produces flushing of the skin. Niacin and niacinamide also have different applications. It its niacinamide form, it is useful in arthritis and early-onset type I diabetes; niacin is an effective reducer of high cholesterol levels.
Vitamin B3 is required for cell respiration, helps in the release of:
- Energy
- Metabolism of carbohydrates
- Fats
- Protein
- Proper circulation and healthy skin
- Functioning of the nervous system
- Normal secretion of bile and stomach fluids
It is used in the synthesis of sex hormones, treating schizophrenia and other mental illnesses, and a memory-enhancer. Nicotinic acid (but not nicotinamide) given in drug dosage improves the blood cholesterol profile, and has been used to clear the body of organic poisons, such as certain insecticides. People report more mental alertness when this vitamin is in sufficient supply.
Niacinamide was first linked to preventing the development of diabetes in experimental animals in the 1950s, a finding confirmed in the 1980s which led to further clinical studies. Niacinamide enhances insulin secretion and increases insulin sensitivity. Evidence points to niacinamide supplements being very effective in preventing type I diabetes from progressing in some patients if given soon enough at the onset of diabetes. It does so primarily by helping restore beta cells. Vitamin B3 is made up of niacin (nicotinic acid) and its amide, niacinamide, and can be found in many foods, including yeast, meat, fish, milk, eggs, green vegetables, and cereal grains. Dietary tryptophan is also converted to niacin in the body. Vitamin B3 is often found in combination with other B vitamins including thiamine, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, cyanocobalamin, and folic acid.
Niacinamide is the form of niacin that circulates in the bloodstream. Niacinamide is utilized by all body tissues to synthesize nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP), the active forms of niacin. NAD and NADP are essential for over 200 enzymes and function as a hydrogen donor or electron acceptor (important for the synthesis of energy - ATP). NAD is also involved in the activation of folate and regeneration of reduced glutathione. Niacinamide and niacin are the two forms of Vitamin B3. Niacinamide does not cause flushing or skin irritation.
