Jarrow Formulas Folic Acid (100 Capsules)
Folic Acid is a B vitamin and a crucial nutrient for the health of the heart and normal fetus development. Folic acid is a methyl donor needed to reduce homocysteine back to methionine and for accurate synthesis of DNA and normal cell division throughout life including during pregnancy.
Folic acid is essential for the synthesis of adenine and thymine, two of the four nucleic acids that make up our genes, DNA and chromosomes. It is also required for the proper metabolism of the essential amino acid methionine that is found primarily in animal proteins. A folic acid deficiency has been clearly linked to an elevated level of homocysteine, a sulfur-containing amino acid. High homocysteine levels, in turn, have been linked to cardiovascular disease and a host of other undesirable conditions.
Approximately half of all pregnancies are unplanned, so the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has taken steps to fortify certain foods so that all women of childbearing age get a daily dose of folic acid. The following foods can help you obtain your recommended amount of folic acid: Leafy green vegetables, such as a large spinach salad Citrus fruits, such as orange juice Beans Breads Cereals Rice Pastas
A daily vitamin with folic acid may be suggested by your health care provider since the food listed above may not contain enough folic acid to meet the daily requirement. Scientific research demonstrates that adequate folic acid consumption may reduce a woman’s risk of having a child with brain or spinal cord defects.

What are the benefits of Vitamins and Minerals?
Vitamins are essential to sustain life and we must get them from our natural foods or dietary supplements. The nutrition they provide help people feel better, more energetic and assist the body with normal functions. Vitamins and minerals are necessary for our growth, vitality and well-being.
Vitamins and minerals are essential for our body but they are no replacement for food. A vitamin or mineral has no caloric or energy value by itself, but when taken as a dietary supplement to your daily food intake, they can help supplement your daily diet by balancing out the deficiencies of improper eating habits, overcooked foods and non-nutritive, processed foods. Sometimes vitamins are used as therapies for various ailments and disease.

What role do minerals play to keep us healthy?
In addition to vitamins, your body needs minerals to aid in the assimilation of the vitamins. Minerals help accelerate the billions of chemical reactions occurring in your body all the time. Some help in the efficient metabolization of proteins, fat and carbohydrates. Others help regulate the utilization of certain vitamins. Minerals actually become components of the body structure - bones, cartilage, toenails and fingernails, and they contribute toward hardness and strength.

I have heard that taking Vitamin E increases DHEA levels in body, is that true?
Vitamin E has recently been shown to protect/ preserve critical DHEA levels in the brain. It is suspected that preserving DHEA levels in the brain may delay the onset of many mental degenerative diseases associated with "getting older". According to a study done by Japanese researchers, vitamin E deficient diet notably reduced brain (adrenal) DHEA levels. However, using more vitamin E did not increase adrenal DHEA levels beyond normal values.

When can magnesium deficiency occur?
Even though dietary surveys suggest that many Americans do not consume magnesium in recommended amounts, magnesium deficiency is rarely seen in the United States in adults. When magnesium deficiency does occur, it is usually due to excessive loss of magnesium in urine, gastrointestinal system disorders that cause a loss of magnesium or limit magnesium absorption, or a chronically low intake of magnesium.
Who may need extra magnesium?
Magnesium supplementation is usually indicated when a specific health problem or condition causes an excessive loss of magnesium or limits magnesium absorption. Healthy adults who eat a varied diet do not generally need to take a magnesium supplement.
