What is DHEA?
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is the most abundant steroid in the body. DHEA is a steroid precursor produced by the adrenal gland and converted to testosterone or the estrogens by the body's tissues. Adequate DHEA levels give the body the building blocks necessary to produce these hormones. Levels of DHEA are inversely associated with coronary artery disease. Taking DHEA may increase IGF-1 levels and increase the sense of well-being. DHEA levels decrease with age.
Who needs it?
Because DHEA levels decrease with age, people above middle age can have incredible results as the studies above have shown. Body builders or athletes can have some of the greatest beneficial results. They can use it to help build strong muscles and lower body fat. It is also said to help keep the brain clear and the skin smooth as well!

What are the benefits of DHEA supplements?
Here are some DHEA benefits that include:
- "Promote weight loss and muscle gain" as claimed mainly by the manufacturers and distributors; however very few case studies have shown this to be true - so be cautious
- "DHEA can also help increase metabolism" - this claim also comes from the manufacturers. Again, there's little evidence to prove this
- DHEA can lead to increase in libido and sex drive since DHEA does stimulate increase in levels of sex hormones
- It can help improve your overall sense of well-being
Recommended DHEA doses range from 50 to 100mg per day. Most DHEA products contain either 50mg or 100mg of DHEA, and you shouldn't take more than 100mg per day. Also, long term use of DHEA is not recommended as it does effect your level of hormones. Your best choice is to cycle DHEA like you would cycle any other prohormone

How much should I take?
When used in the correct dosages, DHEA is great. But, with any kind or hormone or compound, when used incorrectly it can cause problems. The exact right dosage may vary with each individual, so consulting a physician is probably a good idea. Women and men over age 60 are commonly prescribed 50mg and 100mg. Obviously since younger people produce more DHEA naturally, they should take less. Pregnant or nursing women should not take it.

How does DHEA affect brain health?
DHEA may enhance long-term memory. Dr. Eugene Roberts found that DHEA also enhanced long-term memory in mice undergoing avoidance training. It may play a similar role in human brain function. He also found that very low concentrations of DHEA were found to increase the number of neurons, their ability to establish contacts, and their differentiation in cell cultures.

Are there any studies done on DHEA?
Yes, there are many studies done and being done on DHEA. In a study at the University of California School of Medicine, La Jolla, DHEA was given to 13 men and 17 women aged 40 to 70 years. They took either 50 mg. DHEA or a placebo every day for 6 months. Results showed that 84% of the women and 67% of the men taking DHEA showed "a remarkable increase in perceived physical and psychological well-being" as compared to the placebo group. Individuals, taking DHEA reported an improved ability to deal with stressful situations, increased energy, deeper sleep, improved mood and more relaxed feelings.
