Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin which is essential for normal functioning of the body. Humans don't have the ability to make their own vitamin C and therefore must obtain vitamin C through our diet.
Vitamin C assists the body in the production of collagen. Collagen is an important structural element in blood vessel walls, gums, and bones.
Vitamin C is also an effective antioxidant that protects proteins and genetic materials (RNA and DNA) from damage by free radicals.
Rose hips are the fruit of the rosebush. They develop after the petals have dropped off the flowers. In the fall, some varieties are orange or red, and they range from the size of a cranberry to that of a small plum. They have a lot of seeds and a bit of tart pulp. Rose hips have very high vitamin C content, providing even more than citrus fruits. Rose hips also contain vitamins A, B-3, D and E as well as bioflavonoids, citric acid, flavonoids, fructose, malic acid, tannins and zinc.
